I'm guessing the reason it was played so infrequently after 1969 is the highly improvisational nature of the song. It never sounded exactly the same, because its basically just a Pig rap backed with comparatively loose jamming. By 1970, the band was definately making a concerted effort to play songs and to play tighter. They were still jamming, but the later jams were at least somewhat more structured.

That sounds about right it's still a shame though just because how big that song's balls are.

Great point about the improvisational nature...always loved it. Thought Warren did a good job with it during the 09 "Dead" run at the Forum in LA as well (5/09/09). Might want to give it a listen if you don't have an issue with the various "redos" of the band.
